- a (aspirating), vocative particles; a dhuine, 164
- a, pers. pron. gen. sg. and pl. = ‘his, its,’ aspirates; =’her,’ prefixes h- to vowels; = ‘their,’ eclipses. Combines with certain prepp., dá = do a, agá, ’gá, etc. Often, a bheag nó a mhór, ‘little or much of it,’ = ‘anything at all,’ 3751; esp. in negative clauses, 195, 2563, 6319, 7143;--introductory of the demonstrative: a samhail sin, ‘the like of that,’ 6903; a chontrárdha sin, 4946; a lán, ‘many,’ 6394. The masc. sg. used proleptically before an abstract noun makes the following clause equivalent to a gen. depending on that noun: a usacht dó, ‘the ease of it to him,’ i.e., ‘the ease with which he could have had,’ etc., 486; créad é a dhearóile ataoi, ‘how wretched thou art!’ 10434; a lomnachtaighe fhágbhas an bás iad, 657; a fhoiréignighe éigheas sé, 4757; esp. with verbal nouns of saying or thinking: ní héidir a mheas go mbiadh, 396; so, 495, 745, 884, etc.; agá rádh, 148, 260; féadtar a rádh, 585, etc; a fhiafraighidh, 4870, 5103; a fhios, 10281; ’gá iarraidh, 2108; hence extended to such cases as : a theacht de sin é do chailleamh an ghill, 10638. The proleptic pronoun cannot be used when the gen. is expressed: ag rádh na mbriathar so, 474
- a (eclipsing), rel. pron. used only after prepp.: as a ndéine, 633. Combines with prepp. as 2 a: dá, ré, 43, ó, 1749, etc.; with i generally ’na, ’na mbí, 332, but sometimes the prep. alone is used: áit i bhfacaidh, 576, i rabhadar, 93; with perfective ro: ór fhásadar, 5, lér turnadh í, 64. The nom. or acc. is supplied by the rel. form of the vb. For the gen. construction see ag and ’sa.
- a, demonstrative-relative, ‘that which, what, all that;’ combines with prepp. and particle ro as 3 a. As rel., subj. or obj. of the following vb., as demonst. subj. or obj. of preceding clause, or treated as gen. or gov. by prep.: gur mharbh a dtarla dá chóir, 761; is lór dhúinn ar sgaipeadh d’aimsir linn, 2369; ro-áireamh a bhfuil d’ilphian-aíbh, 1983; gach aon dar fhás 7 dá bhfásfaidh, ‘every one of those who have sprung and shall spring,’ 13
- a, particle (=pron. gen. sg. fem.) used before the abstract numeral: a dó dhéag, 1554, óna ceathaír, 1534; a cúig, 1370; a deich, 7861
- a, form of prep. as, q.v.
